Detect projects with same website

I just discovered that the Openfire, Smack API, Spark, XIFF (and maybe more?) projects all link to the same URL, while they all have their own project page on that website. Wouldn't it be more convenient for Ohloh users to link to that project page instead? The reason why the same URL is added by the project owner, might have something to do with obtaining a higher Google page ranking, I guess.

So, my question now is: shouldn't this be seen as link spam? And if so, wouldn't it be useful if Ohloh automatically shows an error when someone wants to add a second project with exactly the same URL as an existing project? I think such a feature in Ohloh might also help to reduce the accidential duplicate submission of a new project.

hi Entel,

Thanks for bringing this up.
I'm not sure this is really link spam or not - the page these projects point to does contain direct download links. However - I agree that the specific project links are more useful than the homepage currently linked.
Your feature suggestion to catch duplicate home pages is very reasonable. I looked up the database and found about 50 projects cases where projects shared the same home page (45 with counts of 2). I suspect a few of them might be legit since some very small projects share pages. However, our current focus with the new release features means it will probably take a while to get to this feature.
Meanwhile we will add rel=nofollow on our project home links to discourage any link spamming.
Thanks again!
