CSS sprite maps are a Good Thing(tm). The advantages of using a CSS sprite map versus image slicing are well defined by Yahoo's Exceptional Performance team.
The problem? CSS sprites maps are very brittle. Creating and maintaining the CSS and images by hand is tedious and error prone.
Django Sprites changes that. Django Sprites hooks into django's template engine to give designers an easy way of managing sprite maps inside of existing stylesheets. Django Sprites also uses the Python Imaging Library to generate the actual sprite image map itself. By generating both the stylesheet and the image map, updating the sprite map is quick and easy.
We aim to have our first release sometime in Summer 2009
Note: The project is not dead. Please see this issue for a discussion of development in the short term.
