Use your camcorder as web cam
The main video API for Linux - Video4Linux or V4L - does not support any FireWire devices. You have to use one of those cheap USB webcams, even if you own a camcorder with a much better lens and higher framerates.
Coriander is a tool to access FireWire cameras using the V4L API. Unfortunately, it works only with IIDC compatible cameras, not with camcorders.
DV4Linux is not as fancy as Coriander, but provides a similar functionality for camcorders.
With DV4Linux, you can finally use your V4L application with better cameras
DV4Linux provides two programs to access the camcorder. dv4lstart uses the LD_PRELOAD mechanism and works with most programs. dv4l uses the vloopback kernel module and might work better than dv4lstart in some cases. Most V4L applications
