Project Summary

Ipsum Unit is based on the following observations:

Today's software design is based on complex high-level functional specifications. Software is more and more though as a service. Those specifications are numerous and hard to formalize for a static analysis to be performed directly on the source code. Non-regression tests require large amounts of data. Most of the time, data for meaningfull test cases has to be generated by a human following the use-case scenarios. Raw (log) data is available in huge quantities.

Because use-cases diagrams are everything but a formal tool, many important real-life cases will not be reproduced. This is especially the case of interactive software which does not follow a specific workflow.

Given the observed input/output data during normal operation, Ipsum Unit proposes to automatically generate and verify scenarios for non-regression tests.

What Ipsum Unit is and is not aboutIpsum Unit approach is a statistical one (more precisely based on HHMM). It is not a formal verifier. Ipsum Unit is specifically suited for massive, highly dimensional, non-homogenous data, such as XML data, etc. The project does not deal with numerical data for the moment. Ipsum Unit is currently not designed with performance in mind. It is still in an early experimental state. Why Ipsum Unit?Ipsum Unit is a contraction of lorem ipsum and unit test. It refers to the ability of auto-generating "plausible" data from a previous sample.
