Newscoop 4.2 released with API, new responsive theme and Arabic translations Newscoop 4.2 is out today with a new REST API, new responsive theme, Newscoop theme cookbook for web designers, and a focus on the Arabic-speaking world with two ... [More] groundbreaking news sites, a backend localization and a user manual translated into Arabic. Newscoop is an open source CMS created by journalists to help news organisations build great-looking, community driven, professional news sites. Download Newscoop 4.2 free! Newscoop installation is supported on Ubuntu Linux 12.04 (Precise), Debian GNU/Linux 7.0 (Wheezy), and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4 (Santiago). See who's using Newscoop Check out the demo Read the REST API documentation No REST for the wicked Newscoop now has an API that provides access to content for third-party applications via read-only services. Known as Gimme API, it can fetch content like Newscoop articles, organise them (in featured article lists, or by sections and topic), and then be displayed as widgets on any site (here's how). Users' data can be served as well (like email addresses or biographical information). Future development will allow data to be pushed into Newscoop via write services. Build your own theme (or use a free one) Aside from having one great looking new theme, Quetzal, we've updated Rockstar and The New Custodian themes to be fully responsive and stable. We've also overhauled our theme-builders Cookbook. Inside this you will find our new easy to use design theme called, The Stun. This is a great resource for novice designers. Now designing your own news site theme is as easy as coding basic HTML and the Cookbook offers lots of practical and more advanced tips on how to stand out from the crowd. There are more ready-made themes for Newscoop 4.2 over in the gallery. What's more, we've been experimenting with accessible design. Using W3C-validated HTML/CSS, recently relaunched Kobinet showcases the ability to run a website with Newscoop while fulfilling all the requirements of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. Speaking your language There's been a real focus on Arabic-language sites in the run-up to this release. We celebrated the launch of two amazing new sites in Yemen and Sudan (Yemen's Women Power and Al-Taghyeer). The team have also localized the entire Newscoop interface, and our amazing community contributed to translating the Newscoop user manual. Many thanks to Cullen Reddy and Mohamed Essam for the Arabic localization, and Elene Margvelashvili for the Georgian localization. Plugins system We've included an early version of the redesigned Newscoop plugins system with this release. This will allow people to build plugins for everything from paywalls to polls. The new plugin system is based on Symfony Bundles so we are now able to use Packagist to maintain and update our plugins. This allows for more flexibility and better community integration in Newscoop. Want to make a plugin? Check out our handy guide. Plenty of improvements Way too many bug-fixes and code improvements to list here, but expect to notice improvements with... Now many backend strings are localized Fixed the ability to send fast replies on comments Localized slideshow buttons Fixed duplicating comments bug Theme sample sites have been updated with new bigger retina ready images The article topics have a new route - :language/topic/:id/[:topicName] There is a new look in the users management page Now you can configure the 'contact email' and 'email from' address in the system preferences We've also updated some new tricks that prevent spam in comments Download Newscoop 4.2 free!   [Less]

Newscoop's geolocation tools help journalists map news events in Georgia and other regions. Newscoop, our open source news CMS, has been updated to include frontend search capabilities powered by Solr, the open source enterprise search platform used ... [More] by Netflix, Instagram, SourceForge, NASA, WhiteHouse.gov and Apple. The new functionality was developed in collaboration with a number of independent media sites in Georgia and is code-named 'Sakartvelo' after the Georgian name for the country. Download Newscoop 4.1 free! Newscoop installation is supported on Ubuntu Linux 12.04 (Precise), Debian GNU/Linux 6.0 (Squeeze), and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3 (Santiago). See who's using Newscoop Check out the demo Read the Newscoop & Solr set-up wiki Solr is an open source enterprise search platform from the Apache Lucene project. Its major features include powerful full-text search, hit highlighting, faceted search, dynamic clustering, database integration, and rich document (e.g., Word, PDF) handling. Providing distributed search and index replication, Solr is highly scalable. Solr now allows Newscoop users, like the Georgian sites NetGazeti, newscafe.ge and TSPress, to offer faster search due to the structured filtering of results. Sites can also index new content and offer it quickly to visitors for a more relevant browsing experience. Solr can even search inside attachments (pdfs, Word documents) and display 'top hits' as a barometer of community opinion and interest - a great traffic driver and important for advertisers, writers and content syndicators. The changelog headlines are as follows: Integration of Apache Lucene Solr New article-rating feature allows readers to give a rating feedback to the author which can optionally be displayed on the frontend New Facebook Login allows journalists and editors to sign in to site backend with Facebook logins New tags for the template engine: list_users and list_user_topics Security fix: Unnecessary error reporting exposed on front-end templates 11 other important bug fixes Download Newscoop 4.1 free!   Newscoop 4.0.3 has been released, patching a vital security issue, improving the media archive and fixing several non-critical bugs associated with topics, caching and upgrades. Download Newscoop 4.0.3 free! No server? Try Newscoop Pro! ... [More] Newscoop installation is supported on Ubuntu Linux 12.04 (Precise), Debian GNU/Linux 6.0 (Squeeze), and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.2 (Santiago). This release offers a fix to a vulnerability that exploited the Admin interface's password restore. We posted an immediate fix in the forums as exploitation of this issue could potentially allow attackers to gain Admin access to the site. This patch permanently fixes that issue, and allows full use of the password restore functionality. Upgrade is therefore highly recommended for all users. In addition, there are improvements to the media archive that offer far greater stability to news organisations with large collections of images (in theory, it can now handle millions of images much faster due to two levels of sub directories). ZEN*, a Newscoop theme that automatically resizes to fit the device it's being viewed on.. 1) We zapped a critical bug preventing users inserting images and attachments into an article via the tinymce editor. It wasn't affecting all users, only some special set-ups, but it was a common problem in the forums. 2) It's now possible to correctly merge article types. It's not a widely used feature yet, an important one and we wanted to take care of it. Fixed! 3) Due to a bad SQL query, in some special cases (and for languages like Georgian), the Issues in the admin interface were disappearing. That's not good, so we fixed that pronto. 4) Due to another SQL problem (missing field in database) it was not possible to add authors to articles (or list the already attached in case of an upgrade). It is now. 5) Saving a template in the themes manager for the first time no longer throws an Internal Server Error. Phew. Other than that, we also took some time to make improvements to the upgrade process, improve handling of Webcodes and we pushed some other minor bug fixes.
