Amazon Web Services (AWS) was the first public cloud provider to address this challenge. In 2009 AWS released the “Spot Instances” marketplace. The idea is that unused servers capacity can be sold at a massive discount price (up to 90% when compared with On-Demand instances) with the caveat that the instances can be terminated at any time when AWS needs the capacity for On-Demand or Reserved instances.
