SmsFixTimes is an Android application that listens for incoming SMS messages on your Android phone and updates the timestamps to your correct timezone. It's designed to fix the bug in Rogers phones where incoming messages show Eastern times instead of using your correct timezone.
For example, in Alberta incoming SMS messages appear to be 2 hours ahead of the actual time. This app subtracts two hours from timestamp on every incoming message so that the messages will now show the correct time, and have the correct threading in the built-in Messaging app.
Users can also run an icon from the app menu to change the timestamp on all incoming messages already saved on the phone. It is important to note that this feature doesn't know which messages may have been updated in previous runs, so this it only useful to do this once after downloading the app.
End users can download the app directly from the Android Market. Search for "SmsFixTimes", or use this link. This site is has the change log and source code downloads.
NOTICE: Rogers has released an update for the Rogers HTC Dream and Magic phones which corrects the original timestamp bug. However, the upgrade utility will wipe all of your data. If you don't want to upgrade, or you are using another phone (like the HTC Hero) in Canada, you may still find this app useful.
Change logv1.0 - July 12, 2009
v1.1 - Aug 18, 2009
Fix timing issues causing missed messages Handle multi-part messages correctly Added retry mechanism, in case phone is busy when update handler should run Add "test" screen, so users can see how the timestamp will change on a message
v1.2 - Aug 23, 2009
Allow service to be restarted by Android OS when killed due to low memory
v1.3 - Oct 25, 2009
Add setting so user can specify exact offset to apply. Defaults to "automatic". This will allow users of HTC Hero phones or anyone outside of Canada to use the app.
v1.4 - Nov 2, 2009
Change logic for "manual" offset mode so that we don't undo Rogers' offset before applying the manual one. The former method made no sense and didn't work at all on the Hero.
Known BugsOther apps that listen for SMS messages may interfere with SmsFixTimes. One example that the developer has seen is "Where's My Droid". It's not clear why this happens, but uninstalling the other app does fix the problem.
