The purpose of this project is to study speedup and efficiency for various problems on an SMP machines using OpenMP. The SMP machine, node00.cluster.csse.unimelb.edu.au, has four 7120M Xeon processors and 32GB of RAM. Each processor is dual core, each core is hyper-threaded and the operating system reports 16 CPUs. The 7120M operates at 3.0GHz, has a 800MHz front side bus, a 1024KB L2 cache for each core and a 4096KB L3 cache.
The five algorithms to consider are prefix sum, matrix multiplication, Gaussian elimination, sieve of Eratothenes and the maximum contiguous sum. Each of the algorithms has a problem size as a function of n.
