What is the Workforce Information Database?The Workforce Information Database (WID) is a normalized relational database structure developed for the storage and maintenance of employment statistics, labor market information, business listings and related economic and demographic data. XML SchemaRetrieving relational data from the database in XML form is called "composing", and the reverse, loading data from an XML file source into relational tables in a database is called "shredding". Interchanging data in XML format allows validation of the data at the supply and storage ends by using XML schemas that these datasets are made to conform to.
The same schema may not be useful for data returned from a web service as the data elements may include helpful lookup descriptions from one or more parent tables. Is it possible to define a single set of XML schema documents that will allow both single table data from the WID and representations from a web service to be validated? A grammar-based schema language like RELAX NG, a rule-based language like Schematron and W3C's object-oriented XML Schema can be used individually or in conjunction to achieve some of these objectives.

The resources to be exposed are compiled data found in the Workforce Information Database. This includes data from the various statistical programs of the US Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). This is a "read only" service allowing GET and HEAD access methods for data retrieval. XML and JSON representations of the data are returned as specified in the request.
The root address for the web service will be 126.96.36.199 (to be deployed soon). The web service is a Python application that uses an Apache HTTP Server with the mod_wsgi Apache module. The application is database independent and can be used with the Python DB API adapter for the chosen database. The current focus is on addressability of the resources and the end-user applications to be designed.
