Add Digg-like voting system, categorize software types in a directory

I just found this site, it seems to be the only site out there, as far as I can tell, that is a comprehensive source for open source projects.

The site should have a better directory structure where projects are categorized by the type of project so you can browse through them, for example there should be a category for CMS, social networking, e-commerce, and so on..

I would really like to see a voting feature added to the site where users can vote on a project to rank it against other projects in its category. For example, Drupal, Joomla and Php-nuke would be in the CMS category along with whatever other open source CMS's are out there.

It'd be cool to have the users voting on what they think is the best open source project in each category. I personally love open source projects and want to see them do better and maybe this site could help users of different projects within the same category to look at the flaws of their own projects and eventually combine efforts so that the less popular projects die out and the ones that are already doing better get stronger.

For example, I have used a few different CMS systems, currently I use Drupal which I believe to be the strongest. Something I have noticed from posting on different project forums is that the people who use one open source software project often seem unaware of other projects (usually people who are fairly new to web development but even some experienced users who do development on that project). I really think a true source is needed to let everyone know where each project stands in regards to other projects as some people may not realize that there is a better alternative out there to the project they are currently taking part in and this holds back the open source community in general.

I like it the way it is.

Tags are a more flexible mechanism than categories for sifting through things.

Stacks and Kudos seem to be a more positive way of lending your support than giving a thumbs down to something you don't like.

Deciding on which project best suits your needs is a very involved process consisting of identifying your needs and assessing several projects on many different levels to see if those needs will be met. There is no nominal way of doing that.

In your Drupal example, you think it's the strongest, but if I don't like php for whatever reason, that doesn't really even put it on my radar.

If you start thinking about how you settled on Drupal, you'll discover that there really is no single Oracle you can ask which project is best for me and expect a decent answer. We all need to do our research and experimentation to make sound decisions. Ohloh can be a part of that, but it (or any other tool) can't possibly be the single source for sound decision making.
