What's new in Canaima Debian?

I just read about Canaima Debian this Venezuelan-developed version of Debian Linux and I am wondering in what is the difference between Canaima and the Original Debian?

How it is tested and who is developing it?

I would presume it's just a localized version of Debian. Google Translate provides more insight.

Canaima is a GNU / Linux distribution based on Debian Venezuelan emerging as a solution to meet the needs of end users office of the National Public Administration (APN) and to comply with the presidential decree no. 3390 on the use of Open Technologies in APN.

They probably localized, set up the desktop properly, paid for testing and added a few additional tools required for use in their government.

Otherwise, I recommend you try Google-Translating their official site like I did to find additional information.

Canaima is based on a snapshot of Debian Lenny a couple months ago. It uses the d-i, debconf preseeding and some package overlays to customize the environment. It also uses its own repos.

It's a general purpose distribution aimed to fulfill Government needs, which include some massive hardware distribution projects such as VIT.

ONUVA (onuva.com), a local FOSS firm, is in charge of developing and maintaining it under a contract with government's IT office.

Feel free to contact me for more details, or visit the project's entry on Ohloh. -- Jose
