License distribution

I found Ohloh through link to The World's Oldest Source Code Repositories blog post. Some time ago there was PHP Eats Rails for Breakfast article (by the way, why earlier those were articles, and now those are blog posts?).

I'd like to see another analysis, namely most popular declared license (number of projects), and most used licenses (per number of lines of code, as detected by Ohloh). Not only to see which license is most popular, but also what is the difference between those two metrics.

Hi Jakub,

We wrote the PHP v. Rails article before our web site had a blog. The article itself was basically a static page. We've never been terribly organized around this, and as you have guessed we also don't blog very often. :-)

However, I agree that the topic of licenses is rich with interesting queries. Historical trends in licensing would also be very interesting.

For that you would need I think licenses timeline, similar to known timelines for Unices or timeline of Linux distributions, where would be marked when given license was created, when given license was obsoleted, and which license is derivative / inspired by which. I could not find such timeline.
