Our collaborators at the O’Connor Lab (University of Wisconsin-Madison) are making headlines for releasing real-time data via LabKey Server to help accelerate Zika virus research. Recently featured in the Nature article "Zika researchers release ... [More] real-time data on viral infection study in monkeys," Dave O'Connor and his team are being applauded for making their research available so quickly. "O'Connor's team is to be lauded for their efforts to make their Zika virus data publicly available as soon as possible," says Nathan Yozwiak, a senior scientist in Pardis Sabeti's labratory, [computational geneticist at the Broad Institute and Harvard University in Cambridge.] "Distributing up-to-date information — in this case, animal model data — as widely and openly as possible is critical during emergencies such as Zika, where relatively little is known about its pathogenesis, yet public concerns and attention are so high." The O'Connor lab uses LabKey Server to manage their extensive list of experiments, Illumina sequencing data, purchases, oligonucleotides, freezer samples, and other lab inventory, as well as to provide basic electronic lab notebook (ELN) functionality. To make their LabKey Server data public, the O'Connor simply had to update the study permissions. "It was easy for the ZEST members to make their online lab notebook open to all, O’Connor says. The team uses the biomedical-research collaboration system LabKey Server, as does the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center in Madison, which is where many of the ZEST collaborators work and which (along with the US National Institutes of Health) is supporting the research. Researchers created a study to store and update their data, and simply had to switch permissions to allow anyone to view it. Meanwhile, regulatory agencies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison understood that the work was time-sensitive and expedited approvals for animal care and biosafety (without reducing scrutiny, O’Connor adds)." Seattle, Washington, October 15, 2015 Genomics England has chosen the LabKey Server open source platform to provide its integrated data management solution. Genomics England will work with LabKey to design and develop a solution that will integrate ... [More] and securely share complex clinical and genomic data for the 100,000 Genomes Project. The 100,000 Genomes Project aims to sequence 100,000 whole genomes from approximately 70,000 people. Participants are NHS patients in the UK with certain types of cancer or with rare disease, as well as their families. The initiative will bring together an unprecedented depth of clinical and genomic information to improve prediction and prevention of disease, spur the development of new diagnostics, and support personalization of medical treatments based on genotypes. This is currently the largest national sequencing project of its kind in the world. The LabKey solution will facilitate aggregation, review and integration of phenotype and genotype information across contributing labs, clinical sites and repositories. It will also enable review, reporting and analysis of this information by both clinicians and researchers, ensure protection of patient privacy, and support data de-identification and knowledge sharing. Jim Davies, Chief Technology Officer of Genomics England explains, “By partnering with LabKey, we bring on board an excellent software platform and a technical team whose expertise in developing enterprise solutions for biomedical research and healthcare will significantly accelerate our efforts. “We are excited to build on the rich foundation of LabKey Server. It is unique among tools in this field for its quality, extensibility, and reporting and analytical capabilities.” “We see enormous potential for the work of Genomics England to benefit both patient care and research. We are proud and excited to be part of this innovative initiative,” adds Michael Gersch, CEO of LabKey Software. “Building on the LabKey Server platform lets Genomics England leverage years of development with hundreds of research institutions and focus investment on incremental functionality needed beyond this proven base.” About Genomics England Genomics England is a company owned by the Department of Health and was set up to deliver the 100,000 Genomes Project. This flagship project will sequence 100,000 whole genomes from NHS patients and their families by 2017. Genomics England has four main aims: to bring benefit to patients to create an ethical and transparent programme based on consent to enable new scientific discovery and medical insights to kickstart the development of a UK genomics industry The project is focusing on patients with rare diseases, and their families, as well as patients with common cancers. About LabKey Software LabKey Software develops secure data solutions that help biomedical organizations integrate, analyze and share complex research and clinical information, opening doors to new modes of insight, healthcare and collaboration. LabKey solutions build on the LabKey Server open source platform, so users benefit from more than a decade of past investment.
