AOMedia Video, also called AV1, will be developed as a new open source video format. The Alliance’s main goal is to create and deliver a next-generation high-quality open video compression codec and format that is optimized for streaming media over the internet, for both commercial and non-commercial content, including user-generated content. AOMedia is planning for AV1 to be completed by March 2017.
