If you need a library to outsource image loading and writing to, look no further. This relatively new project, coming from developers for whom images are the everyday bread and butter of their job positions, approaches the subject quite differently than for example DevIL or FreeImage, and if you find these two not really suitable to your needs, I'm quite confident you'll like OIIO instead, like I did.
