SF-ACTIVE v0.9.4 RELEASE ANNOUNCEMENT
September 11, 2004 - sf-active v0.9.4 is released in memory of those who lost lives, families or freedom during the US-supported Pinochet military coup in Chile which began on September 11, 1973.
OVERVIEW
... [More]
In keeping with our plan to release every two months, there is a new tagged release of sf-active. A brief overview of changes to the code:
* Admin Control of Languages
Site administrators can now select which languages are available through the Site Admin pages.
* Many, Many Bugfixes
A lot of minor bugfixes are included in this release. For a full list, please see the CHANGELOG file.
* Taming Webcast Table Project
We have begun to tame the database table which holds all articles and comments. This work will be fully completed in the next release but will greatly improve site speed and performance.
* Static Mini-Calendar
You can now cache and include a list of upcoming events on any page of the website.
* Major Documentation Upgrades
A lot of work has been completed on creating thorough docs.
* SF-Active FAQ
Edwin from the Philippines has started a multi-lingual, collaborative sf-active FAQ at: http://docs.indymedia.org/view/Devel/ActiveSfFaq
* GPL License Added
* A complete changelog can be found at:
http://sfa.indymedia.org/news/2004/09/54.php

DB NOTES
Patching your db for 0.9.4 depends on whether or not you've already applied the install/patch_email_validation.sql from 0.9.2
If you aren't sure, do 'desc webcast' and look for a validation column.
If there is a validation column or you know you've applied the install/patch_email_validation.sql patch, first you must apply install/patch_094_092_validation_removed_from_webcast.sql
Then, apply the following required patches for 0.9.4:
install/patch_094_new_validation_table.sql
install/patch_094_calendar.sql
install/patch_094_calendar_artmime.sql
install/patch_094_language_event.sql
install/patch_094_language_feature.sql
install/patch_094_language_table.sql
install/patch_094_language_webcast.sql
install/patch_094_last_login.sql
install/patch_drop_date_entered.sql

As always, feel free to drop by irc.indymedia.org in channels #sf-active or #sfkids to talk with sf-active users, admins, and developers. See http://irc.indymedia.org/ for more information.
OUTLOOK FOR NEXT RELEASE
The next sf-active version should be a major release with a couple large feature additions and continued improvement of the code, which include:
* Re-working articles, attachments, comments and webcast table: we plan to separate comments and articles into two new tables and re-design the schema for both. This is the primary bottleneck on all sf-active sites and this schema/code change should significantly reduce the overhead on all sf-active sites.
* Spec'ing out and developing a producer/cache type engine (modeled after mir) to allow for all-static sites.
* Addition of new San Francisco Indymedia Admin: SF-IMC has been working on a parallel admin interface for editing center columns (based on local, non-tech collective decisions) and this will be in the next release as an optional replacement for the existing admin process.
* Continued major overhauls to software SQL, adherence to OOP, adherence with phpdoc for API Documentation. [Less]
